Kim West-Garner's portraits are contemporary and realistic custom works with a focus on color and pattern. Figures are rendered in graphite while the backgrounds, subject's clothing or other surroundings are painted with gouache, watercolors and/or acrylics. The backgrounds serve as a kind of wallpaper, with inspiration for each design pattern taken from the portrait subject.

Kim works from photographs. In most situations, she begins with a photo shoot in the subject's home. Time spent photographing and talking with subjects in their own environment provides further visual and emotional information that informs each completed work. Kim's nature and process put even the most fidgety or self-conscience subjects at ease. Photo sessions are complete when expressions, features and moments unique to the subject are captured - all of which translate into the completed portrait. Kim's portraits capture a personality and sense of life beyond their technically realistic representation.

Kim also works from client provided photos, especially when geography is a prohibitive issue, the photos are of a vintage nature or are from an event that has passed - such as a wedding or other special event. When working from client's photographs, stories and anecdotes are especially encouraged in regard to the portrait subject(s) so that distinct personalities can be more fully incorporated into the work.

Kim is a working artist based in Los Angeles, CA and New York, NY.
